About FX Session Clock

Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York — when each opens and closes in South African time, which are open right now, and where they overlap.

Why we built this

Session tables are everywhere and almost all of them are published in GMT or in the reader's browser zone. South African traders sit two hours ahead of UTC, which puts the London open at 09:00 SAST and the London–New York overlap, the most liquid stretch of the day for ZAR pairs, between 14:00 and 18:00 SAST. Those are the numbers a Johannesburg trader plans a day around, and they are the numbers this clock shows without arithmetic.

Daylight saving is the catch

South Africa does not observe daylight saving. London and New York do, and they switch on different dates. For several weeks each spring and autumn the session times most tables print are an hour wrong for a South African reader. The clock here derives the open and close from each market's own time zone rather than from a fixed offset, which is why its times shift during those weeks while a static table does not.
